Default 850xp tranny issue

Hey guys- my friend has an 09 850xp and his having some problems with it. He was out in his field the other day driving around when it stopped moving on him. He can move it to back and forth to every gear but park. When in gear, he can rev it but it only makes some noise in the tranny area. Anyone have any idea what it might be? Should be just start tearing into the tranny? He is pretty mechanically inclined, just afraid as to what the problem might be in terms on money. Let me know if you guys have any ideas. I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!
Jeff

I agree with ramman check the belt I was at the Polaris dealer and this guys kingquad was doing the same thing and I turned out to be the belt even if the tranny has to be replaced It should cost around 500 to 700 for a new tranny witch is a good price compared to the Honda rincon tranny which I had to replace it costed $2,000 so check the belt I'm sure that's the problem

If not the belt, Does the new XPs have linkage rods adjusters from the shifter to tranny like the SP? Mine would not go into foward ,it would just grind and 2 turns on the adjuster cured it.

Sounds like he got it fixed. He ripped the clutch cover off and found that there pretty much was no belt left. Looks like the belt pretty much exploded and pretty muh turned into some fuzz sitting in the bottom. Also found the vent to be plugged up with the stuff too. He replaced the belt and it is all back to normal. He said it actually feels better too now, everything engages a lot smoother than it used to. Most likely he needed to replace the belt for a while now...

Thanks for the replies!!
