2010 550 XP heat shields
#1
Just wondering if anybody else having this problem. Heat shields on the exhaust are getting so hot there turning blue to pink in color and getting very hot. Took it back to the dealer the mechanic says thats not right so he calls Polaris they tell him to check fuel pressure is right and make sure there are no active codes in computer. Everything checked out OK. So I feel I have mystery problem that the owner of the shop says he wont look any deeper into because he wont get payed for threw warranty and says nothing we can do. Just another case of they dont give a dam after they get your money for buying the machine and I've bought 4 from this dealer you think he would want to make me happy Not. So anybody else out there having these problems?

There have been multiple threds with issues such as these on the XP's. Here is a link to one! http://forums.atvconnection.com/polaris/328868-2010-550-xp-exhaust-hot-enough-melt-plastic-2.html

No problems on my 850,seems to run cooler than my old 700. When the EFI machines first came out they were doing some re-mapping of the computer to make them run richer which was making them run cooler, you would think the 550 would run cooler than the 850

I had a similar problem i have 2- 550 xp one of them the exaust got hot enough to melt the plastic where the exaust goose necks up by the rear fender. brought it back to the dealer and they adjusted the etc switch, tps and reflashed the ecu just got back form about 70 mile ride and it did not get as hot as it did before. the only thing they do yet is back fire when i let off the throttle at about 15 to 20 mph does yours do that too. just curious.

My 850 backfired when I first got it the 550 hasn't but all that is the throttle cable free play needs to be adjusted really not a big thing to do check your manual it walks you right thru it.

I've read a lot about the 550 heat shields and the box above them and watch mine like a hawk. The shields get smoking hot but don't change color on rides up to 30-40 miles at a time. My 550 backfired a couple of times around 200 miles, but hasn't done it again and I'm at a little over 500 miles/40 hours.

About 1100 miles on mine, haven't had that problem..Put 4600 miles on an 09 550 and never had a problem..

I could see how they could melt plastic especially when they're in the break in period. Mine got extremely hot until it got through the initial break in period. It still gets plenty warm but not anything like it did when it just had a few hours on it.
It's too bad Polaris didn't ceramic coat the exhaust inside and out. That would be a big help with heat issues.
