Sportsman Popping?
#1
Hey everyone,
I was riding my 98 SP today, and I heard a popping noise in the rear end. WHen I gave it just enough gas to move, it jerked along. When I sped(sp?) up and turned.. it would make a popping/grinding noise. I'm praying that it's bearings.. but.. if not, what else could it be? Thanks,

Two things come to mind the first thing could be your quad is jumping out of gear. This being the case it could be nothing more than linkage adjustment. Secondly the transmission is chain driven and your problem could be broken chain rollers or stripped teeth on the chain gears. One thing is for sure find out what the problem is before you do major damage.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Have to agree with Dazed on this one. Check the u-joints.
On the 98's and older there are inner and outer u-joints. The newer units went to a single u-joint and a CV joint. The inner u-joints on the older models were suseptible to wear if not greased regularly.
Let us know what you find.

If I were you I would check the U joints first as they could very well be your problem and they are the easiest to check.
To check the U joints put the quad on stands so the wheels hang free off the ground. Put transmission in LOW (engine off) and rotate the wheel back of forward inspecting the U joint for movement. Another way is to hold the wheel with one hand and giggle the shaft with the other. If there is any significant movement, they are toast.
Hope this helps.
