Default Starting problems- 2003 300 magnum

Ok, I'm new to the board and am trying to fix this bike for my friends friend. It does get spark, has a new battery and spark plug, and cranks over just fine. It just will not start. If I shoot starting fluid in the carb, it fires up momentarily. Can't get it to start by the pull cord either. I opened up the fuel pump and it was like new in there. This bike was stolen and the person jammed a screwdriver in it so that is how you start it now as there is a huge hole(1/4 inch all the way around). I will probably be getting a new ignition/key set since this is completely screwed up, but still don't think that is the problem. When I crank it I can see the slider in the carb move slightly up and down with each crank. I'm at a loss right now. Up front there is a wire coming from one of the computers(finned one) up front that goes nowhere, it is yellow.
let me know what to do and I'll get to it in between work and school.

It has 110 compression.
What should the valves be set at? I actually had it running for a few seconds, but then I let off the key and it stopped. I thought I read somewhere I can rebuild the switch? What year switches would work for it? (guy on craigslist parting out an 01 and 02)

thanks in advance

welcome to the forum. you said it fires up on starting fluid and shuts off when it burns it off or is it when you let off the switch? any chance the carb needs to be cleaned or did something get put into the fuel? is it getting fuel through the carb? you need to rule out lack of fuel is the issue.

I will probably clean the carb out again tomorrow because I dont know if its bad gas or something. I just have the carb directly hooked up to the gas tank now to by pass the pump and all of that. Is there a way to test the ignition switch?
Kinda just lookin for the lash now to see if that changes anything. Also how does the vacuum work for this? what hoses go where? I see where it y's out and goes to each side of the carb and see two spots in the rear where it goes into. Where does the front one need to go?
thanks again

everything is plugged back in. There is one yellow wire behind like a group of three that is going nowhere, does that make a difference?

I set the lash at .006. Now wondering what should the two adjustment screws be at on the bottom part of the carb and where the black cover is on the side.
sorry for a million questions
