When in doubt, it's always best to check with the DMV in your area. It varies from state to state as to where, when, what your vehicle may be classified as and of course, who pulls you over if it's not legal.

Some places you can ride into town, down the streets. Down here, in my town, they are not street legal at all. Some places you can designate it as a farm vehicle and get limited road use, but it has to marked as such.

Not that you wouldn't get the correct advice here, just remember, nobody here is gonna help with the ticket if they were wrong.

You need a valid dl in MN to operate an ATV in ditches and on right of ways. Only place you can run legally without is on private property.

I haven't been on these trails as much as some others, but have a few thousand miles under my belt in this state. I have yet to be stopped, let alone asked for ID. If you ride respectable, you shouldn't have any problems.

You could always yell out "PROFILING" if they ask for ID......... hahaha

I agree with Roofer. I was out deer hunting last fall and my 14 yr old grandson picked me up on a wheeler. He drove down the side of a county road and sure enough, we were pulled over by a Deputy Sheriff. I thought, Here goes the wheeler. The kid is only 14 yrs old and two people and a deer on the machine. Turns out he only wanted to see the deer.

The key is.... Ride Respectable.

Ditto on riding respectably. The big thing to clarify is how the enforcement is in your area. I have only been stopped once and the DNR Officer wanted to see dl and atv registration. That was in my old riding area. Haven't seen DNR in 5 years at my new riding spot or by our cabin. My bro got stopped by a sheriff's deputy by the cabin but he just wanted to let them know to watch there speed because someone got in a nasty atv accident where they were. Hopefully enough ATV riders will wise up and join a club and organizations like ATVAM. Those are the folks that have the politicians ear on our rights as riders. My hope is that this state opens its eyes to how many ATV riders there are and the positive economic spin that would happen if the trails were open year round and more towns allowed them like they do in WI. We have a huge fight on our hands because the snowmobilers here have a large club base. They use that and the environmentalists to their advantage on monopolizing the trail systems. Sorry for the rant on your thread but it gets me really irritated when my mind wanders into riding rights.

no not leagl. need a dl.

but iv been pulled over once buy a mn state trooper. he pulled me over during the eden valley town days in 05". i had a passanger also. but so did the other wheelers riding around. iv been riding in town and in the area for about 10yrs prior to that. atv are ok to drive in city limits. with a few rules. but nothing to complaine about. anyways the trooper pulles me over. asked why he pulled me over. i said "i have no idea" he said well you have a passanger, driving on a state rd, and you have no plate. well i argued with him and said "its leagle to drive in town. iv been doing it for 5yrs prior to that with the city police and county deputys never saying a word." he said "your lieing" so i argued a bit more. he still tought he was right, and i was wrong. well he gave me a warning. the next buissness day i whent to city hall for the city ordances. found the rule. mean while the city cop asked why i wanted it. i told him what happend. he said the trooper had no right to do what he did. and he knows i dont cause trobble, and drive respectly. so now i keep the ordance with the wheeler. for proof.

this yr i was playing in the snow that was left this spring in the ditch. seen the county deputy go past. mean while i was trying to dig my self out by hand. he turnd around, and to my suprise asked if i needed help. i said im fine. he asked are you shure. i said yup. then he left. never asked for a dl or anything.....

i did get pulled over on a 3wheeler when i was like 14. riding alone. deputy asked for reg. said i didnt have it. told me to drive in the ditch.

iv never had a problem with the cops on the wheeler.
