Hi There,

I live in South-Africa and I want to buy my first quad. I'm starting out in quad biking and heard great things about the Polaris brand. I'm looking at a Polaris trail boss 325 2001 model. I've read up on this forum and it sounds like the transmission can be a problem if this quad was not well maintained. How do I find out what to look for when buying this specific quad. I guess oil leaks and visible damage is the first thing. Second is the way it sounds and rides. Oil smoke in the exhaust fumes I suppose is a good sign that the rings are shot and low compression. What else can I look for?

Living here makes it difficult to get parts and they are very expensive. I don't mind paying but I don't want to rebuild the something very expensive if I could just buy the next one.

Thank you for your time

Welcome to the forums.

I had a 2000 325 trail boss and it's still running. Recovering from yet another roll over, but mechanically it's been as sound as any quad I've owned.

I would almost bet the bushings for the rear shock are worn out.

Thanx man, I'll have a look. The seller will start it for me tomorrow. He had to get a new battery. I think this one hasn't run in a while. The steering rods on both sides have some play in them. Guess they're just a little worn out. Will check tomorrow and let you know.

I rarely here of bad things about the 325 trailboss, all around solid machine. Another would be the 325 magnum. I had a 2002 magnum 325 4x4 right up until this winter when I sold it just because it was taking up space and rarely ridden anymore. The thing was bullet proof. I beat on that thing for years and never a blip other than new tires and a thermistor switch 2 years ago. Of course proper maintenance is key to a good long lasting machine.

Just to let you know, everyone that I've ever talked to that had one has said they are cold natured. But once they're warmed up they run fine.
