Default Anyone with an 06 Sportsman 700 please check in

I was having problems a while back with an atv I bought used, and it shifts really hard into Park, like as if I wasn't pushing the rear brake at the same time like you are supposed to. I saw in a service manual for an 05 that there was a spring that connected to the rear brake and hooked onto a plunger in the tranny. I have looked at my atv, and at the diagram several times and there is no spot on my brake that the spring would hook to, and there is no spot for a plunger to be.

So if anyone with an 06 700 could possibly take an up close picture of their rear brake area, or just let me know how pushing the brake allows it into park, cause I am missing something and I can't figure it out, and it is frustrating.

not to sound stupid, but are you sure it had that set up in the first place? why i ask is that my 06' 800 you didn't need to apply brake to get it out of gear and they only did the brake/park thing for a very short time.

my 06 800 sportsman shifted hard- didn't have to use the brake to shift either.
All these long throw atv shifters (like the canam and polaris) eventually start getting hard to shift-

Ok, well if you other 06 guys don't have it, then your probably right and I don't have it either. The only service/parts/operator manual I could get ahold of was for an 05, I assumed it would be the same.

Any idea what makes it shift hard, or if its anything replaceable? Am I doing any damage by muscling it into park?

I just went out and tried and I couldn't get it to shift out of park at all not running, I tried hard enough I thought I might break the shifter, and it wouldn't budge.

Check the housing on the tranny your shift rod goes to. They didn't seal them well at the factory. I took mine apart, lubed the gears, made a gasket for it, and sealed it up with anearobic sealant. Shifted nice and smooth after that even in well below 0 weather.

there is got to be some thing wrong as you should be able to slide the shifter between all gears w/ the bike off unles in park and you have massive say like down hill pressure on the park gear. i'm almost 100% postive that the 700's in 06' did not come w/ a brake release shift. try jacking the bike up and while rocking wheels front and backwards a little try to shift it to see if it is any better to rule out any extra pressure. does it shift between the rest of the gears fine except for park?

it's common to have to rock the atv a little to get it to shift like stendori said- running or not.
I know the oneway bearing can effect how smoothly it'll shift also.

Mine is a '07 not a '06, but is also hard to shift. But not a difficult as Dismissed. Difficult to the point you think something will or is broken. Mine is slightly easier when not running.

Thanks for the tip, Switzomatic!! I'm gonna try that when I get my machine back next week!!

I have herd I do not need to press the brake and that I DO have to. My manual says I do. It makes no difference pressing it or not. (I don't have it here to check for the spring or plunger.)
