Polaris's Only 2 stroke utility ATV was the Xplorer 400 of that year.2002 Polaris Sportsman 400 ATVs

Easy way to tell is the SP400 (425cc) 4 stroke had IRS and the 400 Xplorer (378cc) 2 stroke has a chain drive straight rear axle.

Lets hope its the Xplorer ,they where much more fun.

I assumed it was a Sportsman since it looks almost just like my 500 HO, but after reading all the comments I guess it's an Xplorer. It has not decals, so I'll try to track down the vin and confirm year and model. Oh, and it is a 2-stroke with chain drive.

I posted some photos in my Album. Maybe someone could take a look and assist with telling me what I've got.

Here is a red 2002 400 Xplorer. Sporstmans,Magnums,Xpedition and Xplorers had the same look.

From your photos it sure looks like a 4 stroke motor. Does it have a alloy oil tank under the left front fender?
Looks like my Yellow 500,looks good without decals,I may do that.LOL

Nerver heard of a Yellow ,Magnum,Xpedition or Xplorers, maybe it had a plastic change?

It cant be a Magnum or Xpedition, they where 4 stroke 325s,425 and 500s and had shaft drive rear straight axles not chain,at least the 425 and 500 did.

One ride will tell you if its a 400 Xplorer, they went as quick as the 500 4 strokes, the 425s sure did'nt.

Yeah, I think it looks just like yours. It has the oil cap on the front behind that rack below the headlight. That's for the oil pump on a 2-cycle engine right?

I thought it looked pretty slick without decals too! May consider doing that to my 500 also.

Thats cap it for the 2 cycle oil so you have the Xplorer. Nice ATV, cheap and easy to rebuild if you find you need too. Do a compression test on it ,should read 110-125 lbs I would guess.

Do not let 2 stroke scare you , I had 2 cycle sleds with 10,000 miles on them still going strong.

i'd say they just went out and bought new plastic to make it look good, and never got the decals, jack it up and see how much play is in the swingarm, that always gives u a good indication of how it was maintained

For $300 your got alot of stuff for your 500, nicer tires and Alloy rims, new plastic ,all the front end, struts hubs ,axles, hillaries AWD system, rad, fan, head lights, speedo, would be the same as your 500 plus a seat, my dealer wanted $300 just for a rad Fan.

If you ever have to buy a front Axle with CVs you woulds almost get your money back.

Just notice now your oil fill cap. You still have your stock Good years on your 500,cant be much miles on it.

Where's the vin on this 400? I can't find it, and think I have an engine located, but want to confirm what year mine is.
