Should I buy this 02 Polaris 400?

I looked at a sharp Polaris Sportsman 400 tonight. The guy got it from his brother who bought it new. He uses it to haul horse food to and from his barn, so it appears to be in good condition. The bad is two weeks ago it died and now won't restart. I went to look at it to see if I could see anything that was obvious keeping it from starting. He changed the plug with a new one and it still wouldn't change. When I tried to start is really wanted too, but just couldn't quite get there. Could this be a timing issue or rings or something like that. It has a nice set of 26's and alloy wheels and around a 2 inch lift. How much would you give for the bike or would you walk away?

buying it when it won't start it would have to be pretty cheap money. if there is bigger tires and a lift on it, that would tell me he's been mudding w/ it so it has been used. the 400 is a little under powerd to begin with and after putting 26" tires on it it would be more of a load so maybe if he didn't use low range while playing it has worked harder then normal meaning belt and clutch parts wear. just a couple of things to consider. imo

Very good points! I'm kicking around the idea of getting and swapping the tires for my stock 500 HO ones and running the 26's on my HO. Then seeing if the problems are minor and fixing. If they're major, then I would just turn around and sell and try to hold out for the $700 he's asking. He's a motivated seller and has just advertised.

no seller will ever say "yep, we hammered it through mud, sunk it a few times in that river, rolled it in a few pits, smoked the rubber on the factory tires and power shifted it into awd while tach'ing out at 50mph!"
I don't care what's on it- a broken atv IMO is one big money pit- unless you're looking for a parts atv.
