no i don't put them back on, and now that i'm thinking about it, i think that nut might be before the spider, i can't remember (its been a while), but i'm pretty sure it is just inside the plate that holds the spring down, sorry had to think about it again

What does the nut actually screw on to? From the diagram it's difficult to tell, but it looks like it goes to what looks like threads, half way down in the tower. Is that waht requires the special tool to get at it?

 

it just screws onto the threads, its a jam nut, but the clutch requires 200 ft/lbs of torque when u put it back together, and i've never seen one just loosen up. the motor keeps it tight

 

All great answers, but have you checked the rollers on your primary clutch? Look for a flat spot on any or all of the three rollers that the weights come in contact with. Second, remove the pins from the weights, check the bushing in the weight itself, make sure it is not worn. Next you have to go to the secondary and remove the helix and clean the driven up completely. This should be done as routine maintenance a couple of times a year, depending on saddle time and riding conditions
