Default Valve cover gasket...

Looks like I'm gonna need to replace mine on my 05 700....It doesn't leak very badly yet but I can see it slightly and can smell the oil burning off the exhaust...Looks like gas tank needs to come off...Any hints would be appreciated...thanks...

Tank doesn't have to come off if you have a 1/4" ratchet set. 8mm bolts. If my big hands can do it,any body can, just a little snug at the rear on the bolts. Make sure you are not missing bolt from front of cover, common for this to happen, they vibrate and fall out(usually one on far left of cover and leak oil). OPT

i had a leak on my 05 800 that i thought was the valve cover turned out to be the pcv hose that runs from the top of the valve cover to the air box was split on the bottom and leaked oil just like that, don't know if you know for sure if its the valve cover or not but if you haven't looked that was a common problem

MY MISTAKE!! READ THE POST BACKWARDS!! transposed ,thought it was an 07 500 instead of an 05 700!!! Blame it on old age,Sorry! Like he says check around the back of the valve cover also for leaking at hose or vent cover. OPT

I just took a little closer look and it almost seems like it's originating from where the breather hose attatches to the rear of the valve cover...I guess maybe I jumped the gun thinking it was the valve cover gasket because I saw oil just above the header pipe without tracing where it might be coming from....There are 2 small bolts that hold the breather to the valve cover but if you slightly move the hose I can kinda see that connection doesn't make that great of a seal...I'll keep probing...Maybe recheck the torque on those small bolts...How often should that breather be replaced???

chances are it's not the bolts that ae loose and the seal on the pipe or the valve as mentioned. let us know.

from what you have said it really sounds like that hose it gets like a 2" long split right on the bottom of the hose and oil leaks down the hose right to where it goes in the valve cover and than on the block
