Default Gas tank placement question, sportsman 500

I just replaced my head gasket and had to get the head milled down flat (over heated/warped head ) I didn`t take the plastic`s off, I just loosened them enough to get the gas tank out so I would have enough room for the job.
Putting it back together, I am having difficultly getting the pegs on the front of the gas tank into the square holes on the frame. The gas tank seems to want to sit with the pegs below the frame cross-member. Looking at it like this I am wondering if its wrong because the gas tank itself is sitting on the frame side rails, it just don`t look right to me. Could someone please help me here. I`d hate to be miles away and rub a hole in the tank.
A picture is worth a thousand words showing where the front pegs on the gas tank actually sit. Thanks for any and all help.

Later models DO have the tank tabs go under the cut outs! They changed the tanks but still kept the same frame design.Had me baffled the first time I encountered this also! OPT
