Default excess play in shifting lever

I am new to this site and I have a 2003 polaris 700 sportsman. Lately my shifting on my transmission has a lot of play in it so I have to wiggle it around to get it to go into gear. Is this costly to get fixed or can I do it my self . Please help.

Welcome to the forum! Check the plastic blocks at the shifter end for wear along with the linkage arm slack at the pivots. Most of the time on this transmission there is a lot of slack on the transmission arm (belcrank). Some of this could be internal wear as there are small gears in the"outer" shift cover. You can check this by disconnecting linkage and checking slack by hand on the trans lever. Also check that trans shifter arm is tight and the gear selector lock out spring(on the foot pedal) isn't too loose or has disconnected from the pedal .Basically the same transmission that was on the early Ranger that was hard to keep in hi range without grinding when worn.Hopefully its just in the shifter blocks.
