Polaris 800 sportsman low idle & burning oil
Ok, so this is my first time useing this. I have a 2009 sportsman 800 with about 700 miles on it I had bought it used with around 300 miles. My questions are as follows. The machine idles at around 700 rpm and I don't know how to turn up the idle to around 1100 to 1200 where it should be. Second, The machine uses some oil when I ride for some distances, The local dealer {where I bought it from} Tells me this this is normal on theses bigger machines because the produce so much heat. They told me to use during the summer a 20w 50 oil and that will take care of this problem. Is this correct? Also any helpful advice would be great. Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom.

Might need your ecm reflashed by the dealer on the idle. As for oil, check the crankcase breather on top of the motor and see if it's leaking there. Pretty common with the plastic housing the factory uses. They tend to warp from the heat. I used gasket material to make one for mine and it helped otherwise there's some nice aluminum ones on ebay for around $40. If it's not that then check the rest of the motor for leaks. Hopefully it's an easy fix and not something internal.
