Default A front diff question?

A friend of mine has a 2005 700. when you jack the front end off the ground the front tires spin forward and when you go to spin them backwards they might spin 1 or 2 rotations and then they lock up but they still spin forward. Then when its on the ground you can roll the wheeler back and forth no problem. Is this normal or is there something going on in the front end? He does has a 2" lift.

You're just manually locking the front awd carrier when you tun in reverse with the wheels off the ground. You can usually do the same thing with the back wheels off the ground also. I had the same thing happen when I had em on my lift and turning the back wheels to get to the grease fittings on the prop shaft, the wheels would lock. I would turn em backwards and try going forward again. Sometimes it would unlock and turn, other times I just let em on the ground and rolled em until I could get to the fitting. Happened more on the hub activated systems, but had a few on the centralized awd do the same thing. As long as its kicking in properly with ALL tires on the ground, usually nothing to worry about. no problem here, as long as the AWD works when you need it. Also, just as a check to the gearing, throw it in neutral while at speed and see how quickly the machine slows down... you should be able to feel if there is something wrong. i think your fine though!

WOULD NOT advise changing gears even to neutral unless machine has stopped!! These transmission gears are not synchromesh as in cars! Damage can happen!! OPT
