Default AWD not engaging 2000 Xplore 400

I have a 2000 Xplorer 400. The AWD quit working. The speedometer, low beam lights, and the neutral/reverse indicator lights have also quit on me. Based on this I'm guessing it is electrical.

Can anyone help out where to start?

I am looking for a wiring diagram for this machine but have had no luck. If anyone can tell me where to find a service or shop manual and/or wiring diagram I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

is there are nice easy to follow circuit board on that like my 95. or is it just a mess of wires like my 2000 scrambler.
Well if you lost both sides. it's probably not a ripped out wires on both sides.
by-pass the switch on bars make that connection manually see what you get.

I guess this unit has an electric speedo. not sure where the sensor is
Is the high beam out too, starter work. battery charged

I pulled out my multimeter and found that there is power to all of these (speedo, low beams, neutral/reverse indicator). Voltage regulator appears to be working, so I have no idea why all of these would blow at once. I've read somewhere that the speedometer controls the AWD, so I will replace this and see what happens. It's an analog speedometer but noteworthy is that that the same time as it all fried, the speedometer lens became cloudy and I can barely see the numbers through it.

Did you run it without abattery or with a bad battery? if so it blew all headligts, speedo ect, battery act as a buffer without it it puts out way too many volts and blowws bulbs ect

I think you nailed it. I did indeed run it without a battery. I had no idea this would be a problem. An expensive lesson. How could this have affected the AWD?

The 2000 Xplorer does have a digital speedo that runs off a "Hall Effect" wheel sensor that runs by wire not cable. Part #40. You have the same speedo I have. http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...2000&fveh=5510

The speedo must work to have AWD, the "wheel sensor" does not have to work though to have awd. There is a bypass wiring trick to get AWD back without buying a speedo. I,m not sure how its done but many people have done it. Do a search on this site.

My wheel sensor has not worked for years but the Speedo is OK and I have AWD. Only the speedo lights and hour meter works when the wheel sensor quits.

A bad Hall Effect wheel sensor and bad speedo are not the same thing in other words.

Did you run it with a dead battery or no battery installed at all?

Thanks for your post TLC. Very informative.

Does anybody out there know the trick to get the AWD working by bypassing the speedo?

Do I assume correct that the speedo being incorporated into the awd, is only for the reverse speed limiter. I thought the old system was fine, not that I have it hooked up.
I know it has nothing to do with engaging the wheels, that is mechanical.
