96 Scrambler 400 4x4 question
#1
Ok, so I just traded a boat for a 96 scrambler. I have replace the bearing assembly that goes on the shaft for the 4x4 drive. The chain ( middle chain on machine) is really loose. I have googled how to fix this, but all the directions talk about is "THE" chain. There are 3 chains on this machine. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are trying to adjust the chain you have to loosen the two 5/8" bolts and nuts on the "center" eccentric carrier (front area of center chain) and you can just tap lightly on the tabs at the top of the carrier toward the rear of the machine and chain will start to tighten. Stop when chain has about 1/2" play measured from the middle, then tighten bolts. This affects the front chain tension when you tighten the center!! If front chain becomes too loose, loosen 5/8" bolt from underneath the front center carrier and you can just use a punch in one of the carrier holes and tap backwards to tight the front chain to about 3/8" slack. There is an idle adjuster at the carb, plus make sure two (2) turns out on the air/fuel screw behind the idle adjuster. The mechanical foot brake can be adjusted by the allen screw on the outside of the caliper assy. Just turn in IF you haven't replaced pads and it will push piston in a little further(if piston isn't frozen) and raise pedal level up on floorboard. Don't tighten too much!! OPT

OPT, Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it and it has helped me a lot. I have the chains tightened. I now notice a couple of pops every once in a while on the chain. Does this mean I need to loosen it just a little?

"pops" are usually dry, stiff links that make this noise as they roll around! Grease the chain thoroughly(use a little PB blaster or WD-40 first to help loosen the links, then chain lube),Plus grease the eccentric hub fittings. If the popping sound is still there after greasing,it could be a chain needing to be replaced or a bad bearing in one of the eccentric hubs that need replacing. Good luck OPT
