I noticed some oil leaking from my base gasket so out comes the engine. My question is with 350hrs and 3600miles, should i re-ring while im in there, or grind vale seats, or replace crank seals etc? Just wondering if i should do some PM while its torn down. Also Is this common? could it have been cause by bad motor mounts??

Clean the carbon around the valve faces in the head then check for any seeping with solvent poured in the intake and exhaust ports. If any valve leaks,then I would lap the valves and new valve guide seals. Plus I would measure the piston for wear in the cylinder and if clearance is less than .002 I would just install new rings. If you have a Polaris shop manual it will show the piston to cylinder clearance and is very tight! just over .001+ new! Piston is considered worn out when it gets past .0025 I believe (If my old memory is right?? Leaking base gaskets are not common,but its an engine and anything possible! OPT

 

any concerns with crank bearing,seals or con.rod bearings failing in these things? I know its always possible, but if you can normally get 10,000 miles I'm not gonna bother. The oils always been changed earlier than the suggested intervals. Thanks for the help.

 

You can can change the crank seal on the clutch side and the small one in the stator plate(if you just want to!),that would be all that I would mess with on the bottom end as lower ends are tough on the 500 and will last under normal maintenance for many years.As previously posted,just check the valves for any seepage and I would install new rings since you are already there! Just lightly hone the cylinder for the new rings. OPT
