500 front prop shaft
#1
I got my motor out so i inspected the front prop shaft and its pretty sloppy on the transmission yolk. (at the U-joint it will move 1/8" either way) I expect it needs to be a bit sloppy, but is this too much?. Is this a common issue? Or are they generally really sloppy? Also is there an aftermarket prop shaft that isnt so expensive?

If you don't keep em greased they will wear out,or even if you do eventually the 2 cross kits need to be replaced. You can get em at Cycle Parts Warehouse for 40 bucks for both. Cheaper than most dealers OR you can check E-bay. OPT

i always grease the u-joints, but honestly never saw the nipple on the yolk with all the skidplates and crap in the way. I managed to get the parts needed for $150 which is expensive but could be worse. I can't remember the grease nipple count on this thing but its in the upper 20's i think.

You have to grease the propshaft rear joint from the side of the atv(under the foot well) where the fitting lines up sideways and the front grease fitting is best greased when the fitting is facing straight down under the atv! Plus don't over look the fitting for the rear splines! A lot of people overlook these three fittings! A flex hose makes greasing a lot easier on a grease gun! OPT

they are a PIA but as mentioned w/ 20 + fittings as my other post stated, well worth it for making them last!
