Just wondering about close calls when the winch cable snaps/comes loose and tries to rope you ore worse smacking you in the kisser?

Avoid that altogether and switch to amsteel synthetic rope. Stronger, lighter, and doesn't snap back if it breaks. Another plus is that it's easier to repair than steel cable. Just knot it off and you're back in business!

I've snapped a couple of steel winch cables pulling atv's- never had one come back on me, they just hit the ground and get tangled. I guess it could snap back at you under the right conditions- I just never seen it happen.

the synthetic line is really nice though.

 

Synth line is easy to get at any marine store. They can make custom lengths and cutom ends for what you need.

 

Had a 20,000lb strap break when I was winching a double line pull with my truck. It was an 8000lb winch and I was surprised it didn't recoil to much. Maybe if the cable would have broke instead of the strap. I also try to put something over the cable/rope when making a hard pull. I had a floormat over the line that seemed to help.

 

never had a cable break, but have had the winch completely stop as it was at it's max pulling. on the other hand the winch that is on this bike had that synth. crap rope on it andf it was broke in 3 differnt places when i had to pull it all apart to straighten it out. just my

 

Always put a blanket or heavy coat over the cable when under stress. Will take a lot of the whiplash out of it if it does snap.

 

i have been on the reciving end of a chain snapping and coming through my windshield(thankfully i ducked in time) so i can guess a cable under great stress would have sorta the same effect. keep an eye on the cable for any kind of fry's to help reduce any breakage down the road. if you have 20+ feet of cable out it's pretty hard to cover it all but it's not a bad idea if you can.

 

Don't have to cover it all. Just something near the middle to get it to drop to the ground if it breaks. I've never broken one, but like everyone else, I've heard stories.

 

I've only had mine break while plowing snow, but thinking of going to synethic for ease of reattaching compared to that steel cable.
