I'm looking at getting a tachometer to help with clutch tuning. Can I get "normal" tach like an Autometer, or should I be looking at something that HPD, RCR, Hot Seat or Aaen offers?
What are you guys running on your quads?

 

Check in the 2000 acc booklet They have one there. It is digital For easy reading It also has an hourmeter to. I think it is around 30 bucks. Hope this helps.

 

the mini tacs are junk. no lite to see at night. very hard to read at any time. call rick ritter and get his tach. easy to instal and easy to see and read

I think RCR sells the Westach, which has a 2" face. I have one on my 400 and realy don't care for it much. It's small and at high speeds its ahrd to get a good read (when mounted on the quad). In a shop environment I'm sure it would be more usefull.

Personally I would suggest the SunPro mini tach as used by a few others. When I get around to needing a new one thats what i'll be getting. A good Autozone should have it for around $30.

 

I did a little research, and discovered that a standard automotive tach that can be calibrated for 2 pulses per revolution, AKA 4 cylinder, 4 stroke. I borrowed an inexpensive Sun Super tach and tried it - it worked like a champ !!!! I'll be getting an Autometer 3.75 inch diameter tach or possibly a marine tach to survive the elements.

 

How do you wire it up ? Just hook the coil wire to the plug wire on the quad?

 

Will this work on the 500 4-stroke or just the 400 2-stroke?

 

I'd like to see some pics when you get one installed...I've been wanting a tach, and didn't like the little digital one (who likes anything little?)

 

The tach trigger is the yellow / red wire at the reverse rev limiter on the 400 Scrambler. Don't hook anything to the coil, as the voltage may be significantly higher than 12 volts.
The 500s and the 400's with the 200 watt alternator have 6 pulses per revolution, so a standard 8-6-4 cylinder tach won't work correctly. The Scrambler has 2 pulses per revolution, so a tach set on 4 cylinders will work.

 

Capt..I have heard about these Tach's for a while now in helping to tune the engine. I am a real newby at mechanics and was wondering the basics of this? (tuning) Could installing a tach and knowing some basic tuning techniques help with the power efficiency of my Scrambler?
