Default No Power

I have a 1996 250 Trail Boss that has no power. Runs like a spotted ape on flat ground but will not go over a 1" - 1.5" ledge from a stop. Normal or not normal for a 250? If not what might I start to look at to fix it?
Thanks

Sounds like the clutch would be a good place to start, take the cover off and see where the belt is in the secondary, is it slightly above the lip? if not, you may need to shim the clutch or replace the belt. Also, it could just be dirty, try blowing it out with an air hose and spraying surfaces down with some brake cleaner. Then rev it up in neutral and see if the primary clutch grabs the belt and closes all the way, pulling the belt in, you could have sticky weights or worn springs in either the primary or the secondary.
