Could be fuel related OR lack of fuel (tank vent tube partially kinked, fuel pump sucking air) or electrical problem. Stator or other components breaking down after it gets warm, etc. Check out the fuel system first, fuel flow, venting, contaminated fuel, etc.Plus not a bad idea to check the valve clearance and the cam for any exhaust lobe wear. 1998 is when they went to the bigger BST40 carb which is completely different than the1997 BST34 carb model especially on the float and needle and seat.I believe this was the first year of the HO engines in the Scrambler? My old memory might be a little off. OPT

That could be caused by several things, but I'd first check that the radiator is clean front and rear, especially around the fan area.If this area is dirty, the engine can over heat. Plus jack the machine up at the front, tires off the ground a little and leave the radiator cap off. Run until the fan cycles on and off several times to remove any possible air pockets. Coolant level should drop in the radiator if there is any trapped air. Top off the radiator and coolant overflow bottle and see if that solves it. This is just from the coolant stand point. Possible if this doesn't solve the problem,it could be an electrical breakdown or a mechanical problem, but eliminate the radiator and any trapped air pockets first.
