95 scrambler rides like a brick
#1
just purchased a 95 scrambler and this thing rides like a brick. the rear i can push down and it takes about 30 sec for the rear to come back up. the front, i can put my whole 250 lbs body on it and it only goes down about half an inch. am i looking at shocks or springs or both? what is the softest spring i can get for the fron. is there a chart for polaris springs and there load capicity?

Misread your post! Could be previous owner installed heavier springs?. The coils would be thicker and best way is to compare them with another stock Scrambler. Most dealers have the spring charts. Plus Scramblers were set up pretty stiff from the factory. Also you can lower the rear spring tension adjuster nuts to soften the rear up a bit. Other Scrambler owners may be able to help you out a little better on this. OPT

scramblers come stiff, don't know why. I guess so one can ride faster without bottoming.
as long as your fillings don't fall out over the stutter bumps.
my 2000 scrambler 400, with the long travel sruts. 8.5" as opposed to your 6.25"
On that unit I put on trailblazer 250 springs. Gives it lots of sag, rides much better.
On my 95 xplorer I added the long travel struts and the same springs, which gave the front a lift kit when not sagged. ride height stayed the same though. but it looks like baja truck when the front comes off the ground. This will exceed the max angles of the front u-joints. I have had it this way for three years no problems yet.
running the 400 xplorer/sportsman springs will soften it for sure though. that's the cheapest fix.

I'm not sure on the rear shock, the fox rear is a gas shock. not oil like the xplorer.
the gas shock has some stiff compression valving as well. That spring should be the
same length as the xplorer spring.
I haven't done much experimenting on rear springs. What I have done is the shock and spring on my xplorer is from a 91 350 4x4. It is softer than all other old 400's I had as well. 94 sportsman, 96 sportsman, 95 xplorer.
I will do some looking on the parts fiche there is sometimes listing of rates with the part numbers.

well it looks like the 95 scrambler front springs are specific to that year and model. except the magnum of the same year.
other springs from the 6.25" front end appear to be the same after 95", scrambler using the same part number as the rest. older ones such as the 91 350 I had, show a different number. I think they were softer, but they might all be changed up.
The rear shock on the 91 350 have been subed to a different number so who knows.
