Default 05 sportsman 90 type of oil?

Hey guys, got an 05 sportsman 90. What kind of oil should I use and where's the cheapest place to get it. Don't know what the last owner used but it's fine and have a full tank of oil. What kind would be best as far as less smoke and smell? Also can I get by with running the existing oil as low as I can and then add mine or do I really need to drain it out? I known not to mix but was wondering if this method would be fine. Thanks

If you are looking to save money, you could find a ag fleet store that sells brands like Injex, but for the small quads, that dont use much oil, I have had real good luck with Yamaha 2S injector oil, very little smoke, or smell, not the cheapest, but good quality oil is important to keep the motor happy.

The manual says to use Polaris ves or gold but like all things the manufacturers want you to use their products. Was just wondering if I really had to or if another brand was like better over the others. I'm about cheap but also don't want to mess the atv up.

To be honest, as long as it's TCW-3 rated injection oil, any brand, even Wal Mart, will work, I like the semi synthetic of full syn, seems to flow better, and protects the engine a little better with less smoke than pure dino oils. Some of those oils are 8-12 bucks a quart, and really don't do much more than the stuff you find in ag fleet stores or discount stores like Walmart, etc.

So just draining the old before adding the new is sufficient enough? Also isn't tcw3 for water cooled only or not?

Best to drain the old oil if you're not sure what type it is as some oils don't intermix well. Tcw3 in not just for water cooled engines. Wallworld Tcw3 rated oil,Quick silver,Penzoil, etc can be used, but try to stay with the same brand. The old original blue Polaris TCW3 that we used back in the 80's was what was recommended for the old 250 air cooled engine. If you want to use the VES or other type "smokeless" oil it's your call on this. The synthetics do smoke less but not entirely smokeless as the bottle says. OPT

Thanks for all the useful info! So is there any type or certain brand to stay away from?
