I'm still missing the point as to why winning a drag race is the most important feature on a quad. I read these forums every day and am amazed by the number of times speed is addressed as the major factor for buying an ATV. My gut hurt from laughing so hard when I did a forum search for "drag race" and "top end". Maybe we should try for the world land speed record on a SP500 HO.......RIDE SAFE AND HAVE FUN!!

Excellent point, UncleMuck!

At the risk of being too deep and philosophical, the drag race/top end fixation on ATVs somehow reminds me of:

"Toro! Toro! Toro!", the precision lawnmower parade marching unit (they've appeared in the Rose Parade), and, don't know what they call themselves, but they're a precision folding lawn chair marching unit (they marched in President George W. Bush's Inaugural Parade), and, it just came to me, the Precision Briefcase marching unit . . .

What do these whimsical parade units have in common with dragracing/world land speed record ATVs? They all involve applications of products far from their original intent.

maybe you should call john force and say (it is stupid to make a car that goes so fast). or maybe you should call chevy and tell them to stop making the corvette or camero that go so fast. or all the aftermarket comps. that make speed parts and tell them to stop. some people have a fun time just riding . and some people have fun racing and drag racing. I also ride a 93 arctic cat thunder cat 900 that runs 10 sec Quarter mile. so i guess im into the dragracing thing.
you cant tell me you or any of your friends in teen through 25 years of age never raced your friends car. or never tried to make your car go faster. if you never did you should try it. then you would under stand.

Im not tring to start a fight just useing my freedom of speech. hope this helps you under stand why we do the things we do.

Speaking for myself, I communicated poorly, bdscram1. Drag on! Race on!

I only addressed the matter of degree, the emphasis, the single figure of merit some regard top speed or 1/8; 1/4 mile times applied to All-Terrain Vehicles, vehicles I think intended for, well, all terrain--not just flat, straight paths used in drag racing and top speed runs.

If going fast in a straight line is someone's pacing, most important, or exclusive criterion in a quad, go for it!

Especially when it comes to utility machines, that gets a little crazy. Who cares who 600-700 lb 4x4 will beat who's in a straight line.

Hey unclemuck --

I'm pretty happy right now. I think it's the competitive nature in all of us to want to finish first, no matter what we do. That holds true for most of us except in our school systems today.

bdscram1,
No offence taken. I should have made my post more clear. I was refering primarily to utility quads. I personally own a corvette and have raced it at the strip. I was mostly commenting on what a fixation people have with speed.

i like an atv that does everything, i love the big 4x4, but i still dont want to be embarrassed when we hit a long straightaway, for me it is just another fun thing to do when riding, i dont drag race really but i like to be as fast or faster than my buddies,
