How to Make Scrambler 500 fast as 400EX
#21
Whiskey...I honestly have to question the statement that your dealer suggested an aftermarket header would not void your warranty. Call Polaris on that, they have the final say! Let me guess you ordered it from him?
TRX430...Just for your info I witnessed two Scrambler 500's (stock!) stomp about 5 400EX's in a local drag race three weeks ago.
O.K., so what you're probably not into that kind of riding, but it goes to show that your 400EX is not all its been cracked up to be.
Matter of fact 400EX's are my favorite thing to race. Yea, I have a 60+HP 400L 2-Stroke, but the look on the faces of some of these guys after I make their "hollier than thou" 400EX look like a 250X is worth a million dollars!!!
I'm glad I choose my Polaris, when your going that fast who wants to worry about hitting every gear? Having an auto makes it easier to look behind and see the competition. You may pass a stock Scrambler 500 on a tight trail, but dont even think about lining up with me

TRX430,
He IS picking on some one is own size...
In fact your have quite the weight advantage in the situation. I'd diffently give you the upper hand in this one if you were to look on paper. A drag race between the two of you would be super fun to watch though. At least for us Polaris owners.
Like I said I wasn't that impressed with the 400EX I rode & my Scrambler only has a pipe and jet & airbox mod. It's still a fat, slow, automatic.

If you put the two motors side by side. The 400 two stroke is a lot more powerfull motor because it is a two stroke.A 400 four stroke only fires half as many times as a two stroke, taking twice as long to generate the same power.
In this day and age of clean this up, clean that up I belive the sun is setting on the two stroke. In two or three years it will probubly be totally discontinued.AHHHHHhhhhh
Getting back to the point,All of our machines have been tuned down because of lawyers(rat bastards). But Honda's new platform provides a exxxalent chance to grow stronger.A stock EX only makes 27 hp, But modded EXS are starting to approch 48 hp (hear that A400L)I'm closing in on you.Its just a matter of time. Hell the new DS 650 makes 48hp and I'm going to close in on that. And be 85lbs lighter than it.......
It's hard to compare our two quads their so different..
I'm saving my money to do the mods, But have yet to find a dealer or shop I feel good about.I'd even ship the motor to have it done right!!!Any sugestions would be helpful.
A400L keep a watch over your sholder I'll be their sooooon.Waaahhaaa, aaah cough (lung cookie) ah.Just bustin.
Just got safety tape in the mail, from honda. See what I mean about lawyers!!lights on...................

TRX430EX... Honestly from what I've heard serious mods to the 400EX are costly and have not gotten good reviews. ATVSport has a write up on an LRD modded 400EX you might want to look into. Of course it wasnt cheap ($2000), but speed never is!
Wait a minute what did I just do? I suggested to someone how to improve their ATV, and it's not a Polaris! OMG! what has this forum come to?
In all sincerity thats what this forum is for, sharing info., while occasionally slipping in a bit of sarcasim. Good luck TRX400EX on your quest to catch up to me

430EX,
My arguement (although sarcastic) was that on paper you should win. Not just comparing quads but all the self-proclaimed experts at Dirtwheels and 4-Wheel ATV action say that your 400EX is the greatest quad ever made. With that kind of backing from those geniuses there is no way you could ever lose to a slow, overweight, automatic, boring Polaris. If you did the world probably end.
A 400EX lose to a Polaris no matter how modified? No way, that's against Gods will.

After 8 months of hard riding the 400 is holding up great. I actually think that all the mods I made, with the help of RCR, have improved reliability drastically. Thanks Rick!!
As far a belts go, I replaced my stock last month with a Dayco Max while I was putting on my Aaen roller kit, although it showed no signs of wear. I hung on to it in case I need a spare.
I try to stay out of water so I dont have to zerk every week. I like to get the quad into the shop at least 2X a year (right before the season, April, and about mid way, August) to have it all done. Of course this gets a bit expensive so I'm trying to find a service manual for a '99 and just do it myself.
$3000? Again check out ATV Sport (Oct. '99) for their article on the LRD 440EX. It was just under $2000. Even still enjoy it while you can, there will always be something newer and faster lurking around, I am. Believe me, I am!

Modify the 400 instead ofthe 500. Then you will have no problems with the 400EX's. Right now there is not much you can do to get any major gains Unless they come out with major kits. Right now the major kits are bing built for the EX's, but they are not all that great, good, but not great.

Jack,
I had a '95 400 Srambler with a ton of mods. It was the first 2 stroke I ever had, so I learned alot. Learned alot from my mistakes! I've always been a 4 stroke person really, but I have been nothing but amazed by the '99 400 Scrambler. A guy we know bought it for $4900.00, put $2000.00 down, made 3 or 4 payments & had so many other bills he had to let it go, quick. He let us have it for pay-off, so it was too good to pass up. The wife sold her '98 Trailblazer, claimed the 400 as her own & we never looked back. A few weeks later, I sold the '95 400 & bought a '99 500. Anyway, the problem is.......its my wifes. End of story. There is no way she will let me mod this bike after seeing some of what I went through with the '95. I like the 500, but since we put the blue spring in the clutch on the 400, it doubled the low end power, & the way we ride, this is perfect. I can carry the 400 through the woods much faster than the 500, its weird. I can slowly muscle up hills, and don't have to stay on the trottle or "flutter" it to keep the clutch engaged & in the power band. And talk about riding a wheelie, as far as the eye can see. I really enjoy both bikes. The 400 feels so much faster, but in a 200 ft drag, the 500 beats it by 2-3 lengths everytime, like I said, its just weird. Anyway, I've started to ramble. I agree Jack, the 400 would be a breeze to turn on, but I really want to have a fast 4 stroke. Thanks for the input, keep it coming.
