Default Trans output shaft 1985 Polaris 250 2wd

This output shaft sheared off right where the splines begin for the chain sprocket. It is hard material - would rather not weld.

Need to find a replacement shaft. Does anyone know the years and engine sizes/models of Polaris that used this same output shaft?

Am a decent mechanic but have never worked on a Polaris and not much on ATVs. Any suggestions on:

Where to find a shaft at reasonable price?

How to remove and replace?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully this will help you on parts and availability. Browse
Plus you can check Cycle Parts Warehouse or Cheap Cycle Parts for about the cheapest prices online if parts are still available. You'll have to pull the clutches and have a primary clutch puller for the internal threads(about $30) or might be able to find the right sae bolt at a good hardware store. The gear case has to be removed and split to replace the shaft and while in there you might as well replace the internal chain. OPT

Default Thanks

Thanks OPT. I appreciate the info - very helpful.
Any suggestions on how to find the years/models of Polaris that use the same trans output shaft? Am hoping to find one locally if I can ID the commonality.
Thanks again.

Just look on the Polaris parts catalog at the 85-87 models and see if they are the same. This gear case was changed on the 88 models so none of the parts on this or later models will work. You're just about at the end of the line for "hard parts" on a model this old. Again look up the parts also at Cycle Parts Warehouse parts list and it will show whether available or NLA. OPT

Default OPT good stuff

Thanks OPT. The parts diagrams your referenced are very good - will help with the job - and from those it looks like that shaft was common to 85-87 model trans setups. The part nu,bers differ a bit from year to year, but the shafts look identical.

Thanks, too, for the parts source. Maybe I will look for a complete trans instead of just the shaft.

Now, this repair probably is going to get done. Much appreciated.

Might be a little easier to get the shaft (still shows available) than to find a complete 85 model gear case! Just my on this one OPT
