96 sportsman 400 output shaft sprocket
#1
I am replacing the rear drive chain and both sprockets and while tearing it down tonight i got the middle sprocket off, the brake caliper out of the way, got the snap ring off and tried sliding the inner sprocket off the shaft and it wont clear what appears to be some kind of bushing towards the rear of the machine. it has a bolt with some tabs bent down on it. i tried taking that bolt loose but it seems to be just turning part of the bushing. any help as to how to get this bushing out of the way or what im doing wrong would be greatly appreciated. trying to get the beast in action in time for elk hunting monday!!

After looking more closely its the front bushing for the swing arm that is in the way of the sprocket sliding off but when i tried to loosen the bolt it seemed to just turn the bushing and the bolt wasn't coming loose.

Welcome! The swing arm bushing and washers has a nut at the back that must be held to remove this assy fom the gear case pivot cap to allow sprocket removal.Look here under "swing arm/shock mounting" under your model. Browse. One "red neck" way is to dremel one side of the bushing and washer in a little on the sprocket side to allow the sprocket tooth to pass by this and out the access hole.Engineers didn't think about repair when they designed this! They just built the swing arm to mount around the gear case

yea like most engineers they never think about working on things. if they mounted the damn swing arm a quarter inch farther back would be no problem haha. the upper chain guard looks to be riveted to the swingarm maybe making it a real pain to get a wrench on the nut. I should have parts in tomorrow so im still debating whether or not to dremel a slot to make it easier for any future replacements. i would have to dremel both the inside and outside of the bushing washers im sure to fully slide it out correct?? thanks for the quick reply i had figured there was probably a nut back there but wouldnt have thought to dremel the washers to slide it out.

I've been known to use the dremel method rather than tear everything apart!
Just dremel enough for one tooth of the sprocket to pass through so you can replace it with a new one. OPT
