Default Electrical problem from hooking up battery backwards

Just now i went to start up my 2004 polaris sportsman 500 and accidently hooked up the jumper battery backwards, smoke came out from the front of the atv as something just burned up. I now have no power at all and my dash isnt lighting up, what could be the problem an how can i fix it?

Depending on which model 500 Sportsman you have(AA,Ab,etc just has a regulator/rectifier, the AR,AQ,etc models have an ECM control module that does have internal circuit breakers also)
Just pop the front panel and check the connections at the cdi module and "IF" you have a reg/rectifier it's located at the front by the radiator.ECM models have a finned black module along with the cdi module. Any of these could be fried! Check for any burnt wiring on the connectors and any module that may show signs of being melted. You can find your model here under "electrical". http://parts.polarisind.com/Browse/Browse.asp

I have the aq model, i also see where the wires are slightly burnt where they touched to the ribbed black ecm, is there any way to fix the ecm? Or is it more money in the bottemless pit?

If you don't have power(no lights or indicators) then more than likely the ECM is toast! It's purpose is to control the charging and fan operation and does have internal circuit breakers that may have melted. The cdi may have survived, but you wont know until you replace this module or repair any wiring leading to it that might be the problem. Here is about the cheapest place to buy oem parts online. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse About $136 for the ecm module or you can check your local dealer.
