Default Electrical meltdown..Literally

Well I was attempting to re-wire my handwarmers tonight, but was met with some brief scary failure. My plan was to wire them from the battery to an on/off switch at the pod, however as soon as I flipped the switch I was met with melted wires!!
The warmers are the Symtec ones.
Here's what I did..

Positive:
Ran a wire from the battery to the toggle
Then had red power wire from warmer to toggle (previously wired to Red/black aux wire coming from the key) However I didn't realize til after meltdown, that I had forgot to put this wire to the toggle... D'oh!

Neg:
Wire from battery to toggle
ground wire from warmer to toggle

The second I flipped the toggle the wires melted from battery to toggle.
I used 16gauge wire and a single pole, single throw 20amp, 125-277vac switch .
Crap, are there different switches for AC and DC?
So let me have it, where did I go wrong...

Mine are the Winter pak ones with 5 heat settings... There's only a power and ground wire to hook up...

you should not run the ground to the toggle.12 v through the switch to the warmers.straight to ground from warmers.
