Couple questions on 2004 sportsman 500

Default Couple questions on 2004 sportsman 500

1.So i pulled the drain plug for my oil an i pulled the crank case plug, do i have to use polaris oil? Is there anyone that recomends not using it?

2. Does anyone know where i can get cheap but oem tie rod ends, wheel bearings, and rear cv joints?

3. How do i check if my wheel bearings are bad?

4. How do i tell if i have enough tread on my tires?

Sorry about all of the random questions but i figure i have all of the problems an could use some help! If anyone can give me a hand even if its on one of the following questions that would be great, thanks guys!

Polaris first started out with 0w40 years ago which many people still use(Mobil1,Amsoil,etc) Then they changed their branded oil to 2w50 for several years,then recently changed to 5w50 You can choose to use Polaris branded oil 5w50 or Mobil 1 or Amsoil 0w40,or even Rotella T6 5w40 synthetic or any other oil in this range. Since there are no wet clutches that friction modifiers would cause slipping problems,you now have several choices. As far as oem parts Cycle Parts Warehouse or Cheap Cycle Parts are about the cheapest online. Tire tread is kinda up to you and what kind of riding you do and how safe you feel about the tires. On other parts you can find bargains on such things as wheel bearings,etc on Amazon or Ebay.Just type in your model and what you want.This is an example of what you can find. You really have to remove the hubs(rear) to check the bearings out as to any roughness or excess play. OPT

Wow thats great! Thanks allot for the quick reply! My atvs been a disaster an its just problem after problem, i also forgot to mention that now when i turn the ignition i can hear the starter click but the engine dosent turn over, i just replaced the battery and ecm, the headlights are nice an bright too so im sure theres plenty of juice, any ideas?:/

When you hear the solenoid click it's usually starter problems,but to make sure use a test light or meter on the starter wire connection to see if it's getting power.You can tap on the starter and see if it turns over and even jump across the solenoid terminals to see if the starter works and the solenoid is the problem. If you narrow it down to a starter problem,best to replace it and the bendix(gear shaft) while you're at it. About as cheap a price as you can find on both items here.Easier than buying a brush kit and rebuilding the starter and hope it lasts! http://www.dbelectrical.com/c-1804-sportsman.aspx

Same issue with the clicking - proved to be a defective starter 135$ fix.

I always use popo fluids. Check ebay for bearings and such. That's where I've always gotten the best deals.
