BTW - I never mentioned how bad the first cam looked.
Centre lobe was wore down.
I haven't pulled this cam , but am a little concerned about crank bearings
Should I be ?

Don't be alarmed on lower end as it's bathed in oil. DON'T pull the cam just yet until you have the new one in as you will mess up the easy way to change it out as I suggested. Your cam probably looks like this if it's really worn down,I've seen a bunch of em. Pics courtesy of another member.http://forums.atvconnection.com/pola...d-cam-pic.html

Ok about to order these parts
Can anybody tell me if they will fit a 2000 Sportsman, since they are labeled 2001 ?

Thanks

Kyle

Ok ,
Back to this thread..
Ordered a cam on-line a jobber ..
Install went well . Start it up and STILL won't stay running or idle without the choke.

Use the choke and you can feed it some fuel !.

Any ideas what else could be going on ??

BTW - I only changed the exhaust rocker

Sounds like during this almost 3 month period, might be time for a good carb cleaning and carb kit, especially if you didn't have stabilizer in the fuel. Having to run with the choke on is a tell tale sign of stopped up jets or float sticking. Plus make sure the exhaust detent spring on the cam didn't slip during install. Will cause similar problems if the detent lever doesn't work properly.

Hi everyone. Great thread, found by googling while researching low power and backfiring on my 2001 Sportsman 500. After reading the thread I pulled my valve cover and rocker arms and sure enough the exhaust lobe is shaved off.

Couple of questions, I'm going to order a replacement online, probably thru E-bay unless someone has a good suggestion elsewhere that has reasonable shipping costs to Canada. Do I need any gaskets? I'll probably get a new exhaust rocker arm just to be safe. Are there any other parts I should replace?

"old polaris tech"-you said you had an easy method of changing the cam. I would be very interested in reading it if you wouldn't mind posting it or PMing it me. I have left the old cam in for now.

Thanks!

Another question, one of the adds I saw on ebay stated their cam shaft was a "forged camshaft" and not prone to flattening out like others. Cast vs Forged, does it really matter? From what I've the the original failures were most likely just a bad batch.

Any point in getting a performance cam? The rest of the quad is stock.
