Polaris sportsman 500 Failed camshaft
#41
Well I'm embrassed to stay it but there is no other expanation, I must have been one tooth out. I pulled the flywheel and and checked everything and couldn't find anything wrong so I re-timed it using the marks on the chain and now it runs good. Still a bit tough to turn over but atleast the starter can do it now.
Thanks for all the help!
BTW I was recently told by a Polaris tech that I probably wiped out my old cam by using the wrong oil. Do you HAVE to use the Polaris PS4 or will any full synthetic work?

Just inspect the cam for any scoring, measure the exhaust cam lobe height with calipers, should be the same height as both intake lobes.Yes synthetic oil only, but it doesn't have to be Polaris branded oil! A lot of people still use 0w40 in brands such as Mobil1,Amsoil,but you're not limited to that. Some run 5w30,but might not be too good in the hot southern states. 5w40 Rotella T6 plus 5w50 branded oils are two other ones you might consider also.If you only ran it for a while hopefully the cam isn't damaged enough for replacement.
