Default shift box lube ?

1995 Polaris Xpolrer 400 4x4, shift box (hi-rev-n-lo shifter), book calls for 0w40 oil half way up on plungers, mine has red bearing grease packed in it, what should I use? this atv has had little to no service but looks like someone has been in the shift box, has a red and a white wire tie on boot.

Clean that crappy red grease out! Use 0w40 or you can use 5w30,5w50,etc but I'd make sure it's synthetic. The first year models on this type shifter recommended plain 30wt motor oil which I never used.Fill to where the oil is just over the shift levers. Should be a little less than half way. Don't use to much oil or you can cause hydro locking. Boot originally had a small clamp, but if you can get the zip tie tight enough it should be okay.http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...1995&fveh=5404
