Scambler 500 carb question

I know that the diagram and valve are worn out, ordered new ones though the dealer. Rebuilt the carb, question is what is the adjustment for the pilot screw. I have the picture of the float and know how critical that is. But im hopping this is the last of the parts i need.
It is backfiring slightly and having a hard accelerating at times. I assume this is due to the valve in the carb sticking half way up.

You mean the pilot air jet?

Using a flathead screwdriver, screw the pilot air jet in until it is fully closed, while counting the number of turns. Now write this number down, and you can remove the pilot air jet by fully unscrewing it. You will need to make sure the air jet ends up the exact same amount of turns out as it was originally when you put it back together. Set this aside for cleaning also.

Thank you, i have tried the starting fluid check and it does not change around/on the boots, far as counting the turns, i did that...Problem is i did not take out the brass plug, so the carb has been apart at least once before if not more times, only reason i wanted to double check

Once you remove the carb,replace parts,etc and even if you count the turns out on the fuel screw,it may not idle as well or may hesitate off idle as yours is doing now when you get it back together. Best if you have small hands and a small screw driver,start at the number of turns you originally had,let the engine warm and slowly turn the screw out until you reach the highest idle while counting the turns,then in until the rpms drop while counting the turns and setting the final adjustment in between these two settings. Then blip the throttle and see if hesitation is gone and if it returns to a good steady idle. Tools like this make the job a lot easier. http://www.motosport.com/atv/MOTION-...TOOL-WITH-BITS

Thank you very much, i have the new parts coming that i know are worn out, once i replace that i will start the adjustment process and see what happens. I may have to make my own little screw driver though. Thank you very much, for the help you have given me through this whole process!!
Far as letting it warm up....it is -15 and windchill of -32.....I think i may just wait, funny thing is i bet it will fire right up unlike my truck.........
