Thanks for the advice it was the coupling. My shifter shaft has been broken for awhile. Would I have to split the transmission or would taking the cover off be the ticket to getting to this part. I have a 2000 polaris xpedition 425.

Never had to replace one, just stripped shift levers, but appears it's set up just like most dirt bikes. Remove the outer cover and the shift shaft stop cam(#25) has to be removed or held up to remove the shift shaft(#33). Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse The shift cam(5) is operated by the shift shaft. It's bolted to the shift drum which is internal that changes gear positions by way of the shift forks and slider gears. Again the way most dirt bikes are set up.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
I'd still get a manual if you don't already have one in case you get stumped. 2002 same as your 2000 model.2002 Polaris Xpedition 425 Service Manual PDF Download

Not with an air impact gun! Just wrap an old shop towel to hold the clutch basket and to protect your hands! Impact the nut off.

I have taken the shift shaft off an am waiting on the new parts. While I was working on it I shifted it out of neutral with a ratchet and socket and for some reason it will shift gears but I can't get it back in neutral. Is this something that I need to worry about or will it go back in neutral when I put the new shaft on. 2000 polaris xpedition 425

Neutral is sometimes hard to get as it's a half notch and you can jump over it to second or first gear.Should be okay once you have the shift shaft in as you haven't done anything to the shift drum. Look at #5 shows the notch at the top.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Now that I have the shaft I replaced the shaft before putting all the other parts back I was going to try to put the 4 wheeler in neutral and now the 4 wheeler will only shift 1 gear up and 1 gear down I am stuck is there something I need to do or what?

Needed to be neural before shaft replacement. Retrace your steps. If you still are stumped this 5 buck manual is still a bargain if you don't already have it.2002 Polaris Xpedition 425 Service Manual PDF Download

You should be able to take a pair of channel locks and turn the outer shift cam until you find neutral, then if like most bikes you can install the shift shaft and reinstall the cam stop. Yes this is the same manual link posted earlier.
