Default 97 xplorer 500 is not shifting into High or Reverse

Hello, My 97 Xplorer is not shifting into High or Reverse. The shifter handle does not lock into place. When I remove the linkage rods the shifter moves correctly. When I push on the linkage rod to try to shift without the shifter handle attached, it does not lock in to reverse or High. I have tried to adjust the length of the linkage rod, and had the same results. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Steve

Remove the linkage ends from the shift box and see if you can place it in reverse and forward using vice grips. If you can this eliminated the transmission as the problem. If the belcranks(shift levers) are tight on the gear case and linkage ends don't have too much slack, try to adjust the linkage. Have the shifter in neutral, remove the linkage ends from the shift box levers. While still in neutral push forward and pull back on the shift lever checking for slack. If you have a lot, this could be because of worn parts in the shift box causing the shifting problem. Loosen the 10mm lock nuts on the linkage ends and turn the ends to where they drop straight into the shift box levers with no resistance or pulling, then tighten the lock nuts. If you still have problems you may have to tear into the shift box.Plus most people never change fluid in the shift box also.
