I agree, I absolutely has no lobe at all. It would start and idle without any hesitation. Motors are fascinating.

I've seen em just like this and too was amazed that some machines would idle just perfect.Always replace the exhaust rocker arm along with the cam.Aftermarket cams and oem rocker arm kits on ebay now if you don't wont to pay higher prices for oem cams. From what I've heard they work fine.http://www.ebay.com/itm/POLARIS-SPORTSMAN-500-2X4-4X4-CAM-SHAFT-CAMSHAFT-EXHAUST-ROCKER-ARM-1995-2012-/251507924865?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a8f0a5f81&vxp=mtr

Whoa that's worse than mine!

I went with a CRU camshaft and the three rockers. Can get none, one or all three of the rockers with the cam. Nice part about CRU is they stand behind it with a lifetime warranty. Can also buy from their website.

I talked to them and they found no difference in duration of the HO cams vs the regular cams. So I guess I have a sportsman 509 HO now? Haha
Well besides the smaller carb...

1999 Sportsman 509. wiseco 93mm forged piston. Moose gaskets. CRU aftermarket HO camshaft. new diaphragm and block. Summit water temp gauge. EPI clutch rebuild. custom spacers on both clutch springs. runnin Mobil 1 0W-40

I ordered another one just like that from the same seller with both intake rockers as well for $219 shipped. Should be in on Friday. Now time to research timing marks and jot down valve clearances.

Not that hard to replace. just have at TDC,pull the cam chain tensioner, cam sprocket bolts, thermostat housing, and left cam cover to pull the old cam out. Main thing is to not move the crank shaft when doing this.Helps to have a manual.http://gh-ftp.com/ORV%20Manuals/Pola...0%20-%20SM.pdf

Looks like the valve clearances for both intake/exhaust are .006 on this machine.
