Leaking Front Hubs...
#1
Has anyone had problems with what appears to be the seals leaking on the front hubs on an Xplorer 400?
I have one that is leaking, possibly out of grease/oil, and am wondering if it might just be a seal that is leaking or something different. It hasn't been warm enough to pull the hub apart...but might do it this weekend....How hard is that to do? Any special tools required for the job?
I know 4x4 systems pretty good, but basically on trucks and jeeps....

No special tools needed. It is a straightforward take it apart & put it together type setup. Mine have yet to leak, but a friend's did. The hub was overfilled with fluid, and without enough of an air pocket to allow it to expand into, it would leak when the fluid got warm from riding. He claims it was the work of the previous owner (sure, dude) but it hasn't leaked since.
If the seal IS leaking on yours, be sure to check the wear sleeve the seal rides against. If it has a groove worn into it, the new seal won't hold long.
Before you tear it all apart, be sure it isn't just a piece of string or a weed wrapped against the seal making it leak. It isn't very likely, but sometimes you get lucky & can fix things without taking it all apart.

Have you checked the level of the fluid in the hub? If it hasn't leaked, what you may be seeing is grease. When you grease the ball joint in the hub assembly, the extra grease will mix with water and leak down onto the wheel. Make sure that your hub is actually leaking before you tear it apart.
