New Scrambler 500!!
#21
I don't know what to believe these days. I heard that the 2000 sport weighed in at 501 lbs but the 2000 scrambler 400 i saw in the dealer claimed a 490 pound dry weight. How can the scrambler 400 weigh less than the sport 400 ? The scrambler 400 listed at this location for $5399 so i assumed that the prices haven't changed but i also heard that the new list for the scrambler 400 was $5599. I paid $5299 plus tax for my 99 scrambler 500 and if the only difference between the 99 and the 00 is the swingarm and new shocks all around then the $700 or so i saved by buying the 99 will go into new foxs shocks up front and an extended lightened swingarm with an ohlins shock in the rear. Instant 2000 scrambler 500

How much discount from list is common?
And what is the real list for a Sportsman
500? I have been offered 2000 Sportsman
for 6500 and 6490. The same dealers have
leftover 99s for 6200. It seems that there
have numerous price increases that have
caused confusion...

List price, or Manufactures Suggested Retail Price, is ecaxtly that, the suggested price for the dealer. The dealer can set it at anyting they want.
For instance, one dealer has a brand new Polaris diesal that he can't sell, MRSP is $7099 I think, for $5899. The Honda 400ex is hard to find, they sell so many, and the MSRP is $5699 I think, and some dealers sell them over $6000.
The dealer can set it at anything they want as their price, and then make you think you are getting a deal. That's too bad.

After spending this past weekend reading
almost every post on this board and reacting
from past experience, I am going to buy
a new Yamaha Kodiak. The Polaris reliability
questions scare me away. I have a choice of two very good dealers with Yamaha.
The Polaris dealers are not customer
friendly. SERVICE seems to be critical to
enjoy the total experience.

evensen,
I was wondering, have you ridden a 500 Scrambler or Mag ? I was / am a loyal Honda fan, but after spending a couple days on a Scrambler 500, it was so much fun that I decided to bite the bullet and deal with any reliability problems. I now have a '00 500 Scrambler that is awesome. (But I'm keeping my Foreman around for a while, just in case.)
Besides, I need it to pull dirt and push snow. Something the Scram won't do.
I'm not a Yamaha fan at all, most people I know that have had Yamaha's seem to get rid of them pretty quick. Seen a lot of the older Kodiacs on their sides while trying to split the difference over deep ruts. I just hope you've had a chance to REALLY ride the Polaris machines in actual conditions, and not in a parking lot. Also, why not a Quadmaster instead of the Yamaha ? Just wondering.

I have riden a Sp500 in dirt. I was mostly
infuenced by the quality of the DEALER
question. The Polaris dealer did call today
and again offer free labor on the first
major maintainance service. I loved riding the Sportsman, and think it has the best ride. I am not a real tool person. I can change oil and filters and grease fittings.
Beyond that ,it is back to the dealer for
high cost bills. That worried me.
The Yamaha appears to be less repair bill
prone.
I will have to wait until November to get a red Kodiak. The better of the two local
Polaris dealers has a red 2000 SP500 in
stock and ready to go.
Another factor that has become more important is that I think the Polaris has
much better comfort for two people.
I will not be able to get another quad for
at least a year or so. It is important that
Sunday afternoon pleasure cruises be comfortable for two so my wife gets excited about getting a second quad for her.
Now what?

I always find it funny how posts get started on one topic and then take a mind of their own heading in 5 different directions. Anyway- i think you are worrying to much about having to service the Sportsman and spend lots of $ at your dealer. My father has owned Polaris quads since 1996. First a Magnum and now a Sportsman, never has had to take it to dealer for any major fixes. Of course everyone has different experiences but i think youd be extremely happy with the sportsman for the qualities you say you are looking for in quad. Good luck!
