Could be a park lockout suck(item 61) or any of the small gears behind plate #3 such as the detent pawl(#5) or gear selector (item #9). I just rebuilt mine.. Same machine. More than likely the spring that holds pressure on the detent pawl has rusted and broke in half. I pulled mine apart to find a lot of rust and a broken spring. Pulled out all the parts and cleaned them on bench top wire wheel. Replaced the spring and gasket.. About $10.00 and repacked the cavity with grease. Now I have a positive click into each gear. Take pictures of the mechanism before you pull it apart. It actually can only go back together one way as the pawls and shave are splined. Be careful pulling off the black plastic part that has a plug going into it. That is the sensor that tells your gauge pod what gear its in. The cover itself is also plastic so be careful prying it off. The new version of the part is metal but costs almost $100. Go slow and pay attention and you will be fine if you have any mechanical ability. Not that hard of a job.

Probably saw this post or one similar to it. I've seen plenty of gear selectors like this one over the years, some even worse. Correct on taking picture/marking gears as they do go back a certain way. Make sure you seal the cover plate with a good rtv sealant to help keep this from happening again. Hard to Shift 700 Sportsman 2004 - Polaris ATV Forum
