So pulling out spring in preparation of new ones coming for my 04 Sportsman 600. I was being careful but not careful enough I guess. CV that goes into hub (outboard) pulled out. What do I need to do to get it back in. I'd rather not tear CV apart. Not sure if I can just play around and get splines to line up or if there's more to it inside to boot. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Hard to get the shaft spines to line up with the cv joint with the boot on at least it was for me and most of the other guys at the shop.Sometimes I got lucky. If you can't,just loosen the boot clamps,slide the boot up the shaft a little then you can get it back in. Hard part is getting the large clamp back off and back on,very little space between it and the strut casting. Worst case scenario is to pull the hub,drop the a-arm at the strut,pull the strut out a little at the bottom then it's easy on the boot and clamp reinstall,but a little work in getting there.

 

If I had an idea of what it looked like in there it would help me kind of visualize what I have to line up to get it in. Is it just the splines that I have to line up or is there more to it. I really don't want to pull the clamps because you never get them tight again.

 

Inner cage that holds the bearings and has the splines can swivel. Have to get it straight,then you possibly can get the shaft back in. That when you wish you had x ray vision. You ain't the first one to have done this by no means..

 

Well I ended up cutting the boot band and putting it together. Now I have to buy some bands and a tool to to band it. YouTube here I come..

 

what ever you do make sure they are the right bands and are water tight or you will be buying new cv's as any water/dirt and they will be toast fairly quickly.
