Default 2004 sportsman 400 engine sound hot ?

How should the 425c engine sound hot idleing at 1300 rpm? Should there be some light clacking noise? I dont hear much of anything under load. I just dont have any idea what the normal sound is for this engine idleing? Engine has 1300 miles and 347 hours on it

Engine makes a little ticking as the valves are set fairly loose at .006,but a lot of noise could be from the drive clutch as they do make a noise especially if the guide buttons are worn and the clutch spider clacks against the guide button ramps.Had some that sounded like a diesel that owners let maintenance go too long on them.Just do an ear test as to where the noise may be coming from. 1300 miles,347 miles isn't anything on this engine as long as it wasn't abused. At that miles and hrs sounds like around 4mph average. Less than most.

Thanks for your input.I just bought the machine but know little about it.I have been a Chevy tech for years. So i am going right threw it.New bear claw tires so far and a bendex and pull handle with rope.Spark plug and air cleaner. The fluids being changed are on my list to.Problem is i know little about the drive belt.Should it be changed or adjusted? Is there anything else i should do in there? It runs great now best i can tell.Everything works and no belt noise at all.The engine noise does sound like valves and maybe a little clutch noise if they make some normally.Basically i would like to do everything that should be done to it maintance wise.

Then the best thing you could do is to either get a hard cover service manual or a cheap pdf one to keep up on top of service/repairs.This can save you way more than the 5 bucks for the manual.2004 Polaris Sportsman 400 Service Manual PDF Download
