Default knocking primary clutch and low rpms. Need help!

I have a 2001 polaris trailblazer. All I've had with this bike since I got it has been problems. The problem with it now is that it only runs at really low rpms (about 600-800 is my guess) with the choke fully engaged. While its running there is a loud knocking coming from the primary clutch. I thought it was just rubbing on the clutch cover so I took it off and the knocking was still there. I don't know if I need a new clutch or what. Any help would be appreciated.

Look at the 6 clutch buttons on the spider on the front clutch. If they are worn down the spider can slap against the guide towers of the clutch. I've seen some clutches so worn that they sounded like a diesel clattering. If the guide area where the buttons slide up and down on are deeply grooved, new replacement buttons may not help on the noise.May need a new clutch. Also the rear clutch ramp buttons can be ground down along with the ramp itself. If they are, speed will be affected. Also if the choke has to be kept on to run, somethings wrong. I'd do a compression check and if it's ok,tear into the carb.

Thanks for the reply. After taking a better look at the clutch the conclusion has been made. Looks like I have to replace the clutch.

Sorry! You're not the first one that's had to do this. Most of the ones that came in clattering like this,I showed the customers what had happened and replaced them also. Just wished that clutch sheaths could be purchased separately, not as a complete unit.

Forgot to mention aftermarket clutches for oem replacement are about half of oem prices. Plus all non ebs clutches will work on all models.http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-POLARIS-SPORTSMAN-400-PRIMARY-DRIVE-CLUTCH-FITS-2001-2005-/380882941267?hash=item58ae647553&vxp=mtr

How long do these front and rear clutches tend to last? Of course if the machine is driven normally.I do see with some of the stuff on you tube and all some of these machines do take a real pounding.

ALL depends on how the clutches are maintained and worn guide buttons, ramp buttons, front clutch bushings are replaced.Just like anything else. Clutches need maintenance over the years and if you let them slide, costs more in the long run if clutches are damaged beyond repair. Plenty of them 20 years old or older with original clutches running around. Also depends on how you ride them.Plus only having high gear and not a low gear doesn't help models like the Trail Blazer,Scrambler either.
