2013 Sportsman 400 AWD Transmission problem
Hi everyone, I'm hoping that with all the knowledge on this board that someone can give me a hand with an issue.. My buddy has a 2013 Sportsman 400 H.O. AWD that has a major issue. He told me that while riding it, a chain inside the transmission broke, which caused him to have to ride in low gear () approx. 20 miles back to civilization. He took it to a local bike shop, which is who told him that a chain broke. After quoting him an outrageous repair bill, he decided to pick the bike back up and have a second opinion. Well, when he picked it back up, he said that the transmission is totally locked up now. He isn't very mechanically inclined so he asked me about it knowing that I have spent years working on engines and such, however I have never worked on a Polaris and didn't want to start tearing into it without any clue as to what I'll find.
Any ideas on whether the bike shop was correct, or any other ideas as to what may be the problem will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Must have had a short rough life as these gear cases are almost bullet proof if reasonably taken care of. Has two chains inside the gear case. One for the gear drive, one for final power to the rear drive shafts. Items #5,37. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse Problem may be internal or possibly may be the outer shift quadrant causing it to lock up. Fairly complicated gear case and recommend the service manual.Start at the easy stuff first, the outer quadrant.Manual shows this section along with tearing the gear case down if need be. 5 buck 2012 manual, but gear case is the same as the 2013.2012 Polaris Sportsman 400 H.O.
