Question about idle 2004 sportsman 700 efi
#1
Ok I bought it last week it has 1,736 miles 358 hours. I replaced the throttle body boot because it was dry rotted. When I first crank it cold start it it idles at 600 rpms and quickly goes up and fluctuates between 1000 -1050 rpms. Doesn't seem right. What should it be idling at? Is there a way to adjust the idle on efi?

Idle should be around 1150-1180 rpms or close to this area. You might be able to spray the throttle body out with electrical contact cleaner if the throttle body is dirty and see if this helps first. The tps is adjusted at the factory and doesn't need to be touched unless you know the correct base vdc setting on the tps sensor and have the special "D" type idle adjuster tool to adjust the throttle body idle screw from there. Most idle problems are wiring related, not the sensors themselves. Even the manual says 80% of the time efi problems are wiring related.Usually erratic idle problems point to the t-bap connector or wiring. You can see if there is a direct short on the t bap wiring leading down into the main harness or feel any soft feeling wire that has melted internally causing erratic idle. Sometimes you can wiggle the wiring and idle will change which can help narrow down the area. Read the "sticky" post in the expert section on 700/800 efi wiring problems. It's all because the wiring is so thin and brittle along with cheap connectors. The post was started by a member that now offers better harness repair kits than what Polaris has. Here's the web site to obtain these repair kits. Only The Best You might also have the fuel pressure tested also to see if could possibly be fuel related first. The pump should hold 39psi with no noticeable drop in pressure. If the pump checks out ok,then I'd check into the wiring repair kits.

Thanks for responding. I removed the throttle body today and cleaned it really good. Alot of black carbon. Now it idles a little high at start up then slowly drops down to 1190-1210 rpms. Also do you know how to fix the sloppy shifter arm? It is hard to find neutral and moves really easy which makes it hard to select gear. Also seems like it could easily be knocked out of current gear when riding

If the wobbly problem seems to be in the shifter lever itself, the plastic blocks do wear out and need to be replaced occasionally.Item#4.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse If it's not in the shifter you can check the belcrank on the gear case to see if it's tight or if it's loosened up and stripping out.Item #71.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse Another area that may be a problem can be the internal shift quadrant. Here's a post on this from Polaris Atv Forum. Have a 04 Sportsman 700 with EFI. Replaced the fuel pump & regulator. Started up and idled fine. Took for a test ride and returned to the shop and idled normally and I shut it off. Went out next day to check things out and would not start. Opened the throttle and it would start. Wont idle unless you just slightly hold the throttle open. Any thoughts?
