Im sure its been said somewhere in here but what year did they start 500 ho. I am buying a spare 500 motor from an 01 sportsman but was not sure if its ho or not. This would be a spare for an 09 500 efi ho if my top end goes as its been bored to max specs!

it was either 00 or 01' so that would be a HO.

Pistons, valves, etc are the same on the HO and previous 500 models. The only difference is the cam duration on the HO cams(lobe height is the same) and the larger intake manifold to accept the larger 40mm carb. 200 bucks for a complete engine is a steal..

Crap i know! I could pay close to $200.00 For just a new cam. I was looking at a complete bottom end that i have in my garage w piston from a 1998 500. The piston compared to the one in my 09 500efih.o is slightly diff. The skirts on older motor were longer vertically. I beleive both motors were stock never rebuilt.

Older pistons were a tad different, but on the parts list the replacement # updates to the same # as the HO std piston. That's Polaris for ya..
