Default Odometer Tampering

Hi all,

I just bought my first Polaris quad - a 2010 Sportsman 550 xp with EPS. I purchased it from a dealer with 1322 miles on it, but when I got it home I noticed that the Trip 1 odometer reads 2467.5 miles. Is there any way this could be possible without the odometer being illegally rolled back?

Also, can the hours be rolled back? The machine shows 122 hours, but I have no idea if that's legit either.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry i don't have an answer but i would call them. I don't see how a machine can have a trip that is higher then the total odometer.

What is that check engine light on for?

Weird one.. I'd let the dealer know and show him the pics first. Then you might reset the trip meter and see if it functions right after that.If it doesn't have the dealer replace the speedo.I think it's just gremlins in the speedo.Don't know of any way they could screw with the speedo as Digital Wrench wouldn't even allow mileage settings to be changed..Electronics,gotta love em..

I have read online that it is very easy to dial these speedos back using a drill. It seems that 1300 miles and 122 hours is also out of whack. That would be an average speed of under 11 mph (not including idle time) which doesn't seem right either.

Either way, there is no way I can trust that this machine doesn't have WAY more miles on it than I paid for.

Can you return it? Or have you had it awhile?

Don't know where you live, but some areas allow 3 days on something like this, but may just apply to new machines. I'd just talk to the dealer you bought it from and go from there. Plus using a drill in reverse on old cable driven speedo was a trick from the 40's and 50's on cars. It can be done I suppose on the newer electronic ones, but a drill wouldn't be of any use..

The atv averages out to eith doing 10 or 20 mph over its life. Mina averages out to 15 mph.

Id ask the dealer about this and drive on. They cannot adjust the miles or hours, so if you buy a new cluster it will start at zero.

I doubt the dealer had anything to do with it. The condition of the machine reflects mileage many times more than the odometer does. 11 mph average on a utility quad is normal, that's roughly about the average speed on my Grizzly. I've got around 300 hours and 3300 miles. That doesn't mean for most of its life that someone putted around at 11 mph. A lot of sitting and idling I'm sure. It seems a bit odd that the odometer reads in full miles and the trip odometer adds tenths as well. Even if it were exactly 1322 miles, it should say 1322.0 instead of omitting the last digit. I assume it looks and runs excellent and this is the only concern you have.

Apparently I hadn't checked the hours on my Grizzly lately, I have a lot more than I thought, 590 hours so almost twice as much as I thought and close on the miles, 3342 miles as of parking it about 15 minutes ago. Somebody really poked along, that's not even 6 mph.
