Default Sportsman HO 500 moves when idle

Hey guys. It just started to roll forward when in gear. I have to have it in neutral to start then when I put it in gear I have to give it throttle in order to get moving or it dies instantly. Same in reverse. When. I'm moving if I stop and go to reverse it cuts off.

Ideas?

You don't say what model, but most ebs clutches were affected by this common problem. Washers in front and behind of the one way bearing in the front clutch can wear and cause the belt to ride over touching the inner sheath of the clutch. This spins the belt putting pressure on the rear clutch which cause creeping along with shifting problems. A worn out belt along with clutches out of alignment can do the same thing. That fits right in the range of ones that have had problems on clutch creeping. 2001-2002 models seemed to be the most models that came into the shop for this, but all ebs clutches need to be looked at sooner or later.

Is it possible that that it is just the clutch belt? I just ordered a
Gates (20G4022E) Drive Belt Gates (20G4022E) Drive Belt

Also is there a video showing how to do the Washers adjustment?

Thank you,

-Jason

Yes a worn belt can cause problems as I mentioned, but check how much side to slack there is on the one way bearing in the drive clutch. You can put a feeler gauge between the bearing and the inner sheath. If over .020 clearance even a new belt can walk over and hit the inner sheath and cause creaping.Since you've ordered a new belt, wait until you install it and see if it solves the problem. Oem belts are still the best, but more expensive, but give the Gates a try.
